Mayo Road Substation Project

ATCO Electric Yukon (AEY) is the regulated owner and operator of power distribution infrastructure in and around Whitehorse. We are committed to delivering safe and reliable power to our communities and are taking steps to meet rising energy demands caused by population growth, increased consumption, and electrification trends. To ensure we continue providing reliable service, we propose building a 35 kV to 25 kV substation on a 0.55 ha lot adjacent to Stockley Road, near km 200 on Mayo Road.

Why This Matters

AEY is investing in this project to:

  • Enhance Capacity: The substation will alleviate strain on existing infrastructure, ensuring a steady power supply to meet increasing demands.
  • Boost Reliability: If outages occur, the Mayo Road substation offers redundancy and switching flexibility, ensuring a more dependable power supply to customers north of Whitehorse.
  • Support Growth: The substation paves the way for future growth, accommodating higher electricity consumption and the rise of electric vehicles.

Project Details

We understand the importance of balancing project functionality with the needs of our community. The Mayo Road Substation project has been designed to ensure operational efficiency while minimizing visual and noise impact.

  • Functional Design: The substation includes essential elements such as transformers, regulators, switching units, breakers, and a control/communications building.
  • Thoughtful Location: The site was selected due to its proximity to the load it serves and existing infrastructure, zoning, and construction suitability.
  • Community Considerations: We've incorporated features such as automated operation, security fencing, noise-reducing buffers, and pad-mounted equipment to ensure the project minimizes community impact.
