Watson Lake Renewable Diesel Trial

Renewable Diesel Trial in Watson Lake

ATCO Electric Yukon (ATCO), with support from the Yukon Government, piloted renewable diesel in Watson Lake to explore cleaner fuel options for remote communities.

The trial tested how renewable diesel performs in northern operating conditions. This “drop-in” fuel can be used in existing engines and infrastructure without modification, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared with petroleum diesel.

Through this trial, we’ve gathered insights that will help shape future opportunities for sustainable energy in Yukon communities, while continuing to provide safe and reliable power.

Benefits:

  • Works in existing engines and infrastructure without modifications
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, compared with petroleum diesel
  • Can be fully replaced or blended with diesel in any amount
  • Made from multiple feedstocks, creating more flexibility in fuel supply

ATCO Electric Yukon is the first and only user of HDRD (Hydrogenation‑Derived Renewable Diesel) for bulk electricity generation in the territory—an important step in advancing practical, lower‑carbon solutions for remote communities.
