What We're Doing

Ensuring the safety and reliability of energy for Yukon communities during wildfires is our top priority. Our strategy includes proactive operational measures adapted for the North:

  • Protective Wrapping: In high-risk areas, we use a specialized wrap on wood power poles to prevent them from catching fire.
  • Strategic Vegetation Management: We actively manage vegetation around power lines, including exploring community initiatives and advanced detection technologies.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: In vulnerable zones, we're upgrading infrastructure like cross-arms and insulators to strengthen the grid against wildfires.
  • Enhanced Feeder Protection: Near Whitehorse, our system quickly detects and isolates faults on lines to ensure safety and prevent further damage.
  • We also maintain Strong Collaboration with Emergency Management Organizations (EMOs):
    • Integrated Emergency Preparedness: We regularly participate in joint practice scenarios with EMOs to ensure effective emergency response.
    • Joint Emergency Planning: We work closely with EMOs to develop unified and efficient emergency response plans.

What You Can Do — Prepare Your Property

  • Outside
    • Create a safe zone around your property by removing any flammable materials within 1.5 metres of your home's perimeter. Remember to clear out your rain gutters as well.
    • Keep grass, trees, and shrubs watered and trimmed to maintain moisture and keep brush away from your home.
    • Store flammable liquids, such as propane tanks, at least 3 metres away from your property.
    • Consider using fire-rated, non-combustible materials for your home’s exterior, such as fire-resistant roofing, siding, and heavy-duty windows.
  • Inside
    • Ensure that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and functioning on every level of your home.
    • Keep flammable materials away from appliances like stoves and toasters to prevent fire hazards, especially if the property might be vacant when power is restored.
    • Prepare an emergency kit that can sustain you and your family (including pets) for at least 72 hours. Consider including the following items:
      • Food (canned goods, non-perishable snacks, etc.)
      • Water and electrolyte solutions
      • Medical supplies (prescription medications, over-the-counter remedies, etc.)
      • First aid kit (bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes, protective gloves, etc.)
      • Sanitation supplies (hand sanitizer, masks, cleaning wipes, etc.)
      • Other essential items (power bank, flashlight, multi-tool, blankets, lighter, etc.)

What You Can Expect Post-Wildfire

The impact of each wildfire in the Yukon differs. Safety restrictions may limit our access to affected areas, influencing our ability to address infrastructure damage. We collaborate closely with authorities and customers to prioritize assessments and repairs, which can make restoration timelines challenging to predict.

For safety, entire areas or individual homes might need damage assessments and repairs before power can be restored. We may need to coordinate with an onsite representative before re-energization. If unavailable, temporary disconnection may be necessary until safety can be verified.

These steps prioritize the safety of our customers, our employees, and your property in the Yukon.
